From Fear to Hope: Emma's Story with Dr. Dika
Emma, a lively 39-year-old woman from Lake Geneva, WI, loved spending time outdoors and was always ready for an adventure. From hiking trails to beach days, she embraced the sun's warmth. However, she seldom thought about sun protection beyond the bit of sunscreen in her makeup.
One summer day, she noticed a small spot on her right eyebrow that resembled a bug bite. Emma tried Neosporin and later Polysporin, as suggested by her aesthetician, but nothing worked. When she went for a Botox appointment, her provider advised her to see a board-certified dermatologist at M Dika Dermatology in Burlington Wisconsin for a thorough evaluation.
At her appointment, Dr. Dika noticed a shiny 1/2-inch sore with rolled borders on Emma's eyebrow. Given her concern for a Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC) a biopsy was recommended. The biopsy result confirmed Dr. Dika’s suspicion: Emma was diagnosed BCC, a common but treatable type of skin cancer.
Dr Dika counseled Emma on the most common types of skin cancer, including basal cell, Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC) and Melanoma. BCC is the most common type of cancer and forms at the basal layer of the skin. It is slow-growing and rarely spreads if caught early. Squamous cell carcinoma is the second most common type of skin cancer. Melanoma is the least common but the most aggressive type with highest risk of spreading to other organs.
Recognizing the symptoms is crucial. Emma learned to look out for new moles, changes in existing moles, pearly or waxy bumps, flat pink/red/brown patches, scar-like areas, and persistent sores. Prevention was also emphasized: using sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher, avoiding peak sun hours, wearing protective clothing, and steering clear of tanning beds.
When it came to treatment, Emma underwent Mohs Micrographic Surgery, a precise technique that removes cancerous tissue layer by layer. The surgery was a success, and Emma was relieved to have caught the cancer early.
Emma’s journey underscores the importance of skin cancer awareness, early detection, and proactive care. By understanding the symptoms, taking preventive measures, and knowing the treatment options, everyone can protect their skin and health. Emma now performs regular self-exams, schedules professional skin checks at M Dika Dermatology, and never forgets her sunscreen, enjoying her sunny adventures safely.
